Shrishti Sharma

I work with mud and earthy materials, mostly terracotta, sculpting them into three-dimensional forms.

Shrishti at the mouth of a wood kiln, the fire visible inside, cut timber stacked to the ceiling behind her

The work starts from shelter: nests, roofs, the shapes something small builds for itself out of whatever is on the ground. I build at both scales, a piece that sits in two hands and a structure you can walk into, and the material is the same either way.

Nothing here is thrown or cast. Terracotta goes up strand over strand, bamboo is lashed at every crossing, mud and thatch are raised on the site they will stand on. It is slow, and the slowness stays in the surface afterwards. That is the part I want kept.

The last decision is usually not mine. What goes into a wood kiln comes out carrying marks I did not choose, and what I build outdoors keeps changing after I walk away from it. रचना has been going back under the vines ever since I finished it, which is a better ending than the one I would have written for it.

Most of what I make is one piece at a time, for a show, a commission or a site. If you are working on something and the material sounds right, write to me and we can talk about what it would take.

I am finishing an MFA in sculpture at Shiv Nadar University, after MSU Baroda and MGD before that. Gaara is what those years turned into.
